Exploring A New Learning Experience from Scrum.org

All of our Scrum.org classes are packed full of content, activities and valuable learning outcomes. They are most often delivered as an intense 2-day experience.

Flipped Learning is an alternative format to traditional classrooms that allows students the flexibility of learning at their own pace, while reflecting and practicing is done together in the class (hence the name, "Flipped Learning").

Benefits of Flipped Learning:

  • Consuming content in small iterations helps learning stick
  • Multiple reflection cycles makes the practical application of learning more impactful
  • Variations of learning environments cater better for personal learning styles
  • Lifetime access to all study materials.

Flipped Learning Experience Overview

Over a 4 week period, course content is divided into learning blocks, each with presentations and lectures in the form of videos, reading materials, and quizzes that are provided for self-study. From a common base of knowledge established through this self-study, students join a ½ day session once a week with their classmates and their Professional Scrum Trainer in a dynamic and interactive environment. In these classroom settings, there is a focused deep dive into the concepts of Scrum and the Scrum Master accountability through group activities, interactions, and the sharing of experiences, all with the guidance of a Professional Scrum Trainer.

Obtaining new knowledge through self-study materials along with having an in-depth, rich engagement in a class allows students to enjoy learning in a different way. Students will complete the course ready to take a globally recognized Professional Scrum certification exam, which would be included in the course fee.

Students will leave this course with an appreciation for Professional Scrum, the agile mindset, and how to deal with common myths and impediments to agility. They gain the knowledge and understanding of how to choose and apply the appropriate practices and techniques that will be most beneficial for their Scrum Teams.

How It Works

Learning Block 1 - Scrum Theory and Principles

Self Study

This learning block is an introduction into Scrum Theory and Principles. Students will have training videos and other self study materials provided before they attend the class room setting. These videos include key concepts and will help prepare students to start their collaborative learning journey with their peers.

Classroom - 4 hours

In the first classroom setting, students will form teams and create a working agreement collaboratively. Logistics for the remainder of the course will be discussed and questions are welcome! Once this is done, it is time for a deep dive into the material! Students reflect, review, and put Scrum Theory and Principles into practice.

Learning Block 2 - The Scrum Framework

Self Study

After building a solid foundation from block 1, students will explore the Scrum framework in block 2. A range of videos and reading materials provide students with fundamental understanding of the accountabilities, events, and artifacts of the Scrum framework. Students also explore the Definition of Done before testing their knowledge of the Scrum framework with a quiz.

Classroom - 4 hours

Students reflect on their Scrum knowledge. A thorough review takes place of the Scrum framework and students’ understanding of Scrum is put to the test by exploring how Scrum would guide actions in real life scenarios. Block 2 finishes with a deeper dive into the Definition of Done and what it means to deliver a Done Increment in their context.

Learning Block 3 - Product Delivery with Scrum

Self Study

Halfway through the course, and students individually reflect on their insights so far before continuing on their learning journey toward understanding valuable product delivery using Scrum. Through self study materials provided, students explore Product vs Project mindset and ways to size their work into items of value that can be delivered incrementally.

Classroom - 4 hours

Time for questions, review and to put learning in practice. Students work through a case study during which they will build and refine a Product Backlog using techniques for sizing and ordering. Students will dig deeper into forecasting, planning and reporting with Scrum.

Learning Block 4 - People and Teams, The Scrum Master

Self Study

What truly motivates people? What do self-managing teams look like and how can the Scrum Master help teams on their journey towards self-management? What are the accountabilities of a Scrum Master? What choices does a Scrum Master have in serving the team and organization towards greater agility? A great collection of videos are available to students to answer these and many other questions. And as the course is nearing to the end, it will be a good opportunity for students to test their knowledge with the Scrum Open assessment to identify gaps in understanding to take to the final classroom session.

Classroom - 4 hours

Students reflect on their new knowledge to explore what the characteristics of a great team are. Students are presented with some common real-life challenges that Scrum teams and organizations face when it comes to organizing Scrum Teams. This is followed by a deep dive on the Scrum Master services to the Scrum Team and the wider organization. The self-study finishes with an exploration of the Scrum Master as a true leader, and the stances a Scrum Master may choose to take.

The final classroom session closes with some final preparation for the Professional Scrum certification.

The saying goes, all good things come to an end. However, although the four learning blocks are over, the lifetime access to all of the study materials, students can revisit the PSM subject matter at any time after the course!
